Odisha First State To Extend Lockdown Till April 30

Coronavirus Live Updates: Odisha First State To Extend Lockdown Till April 30

The number of coronavirus cases in the country has climbed to 5,194, including 149 deaths.

Odisha became the first state in the country to extend the lockdown over the COVID-19 pandemic till April 30 as the number of patients infected by the novel coronavirus continue to rise across the country. Seventeen people, who had tested positive for the coronavirus, died across the country in the last 24 hours, taking the number of dead to 166 in India. The number of people infected with COVID-19, caused by a novel coronavirus, rose to 5,734 on Thursday, government data showed. A novel virus is one that has not been previously identified in humans.  PM Modi, in a video meeting with leaders of all parties, has suggested that the lockdown to check the spread of coronavirus will be extended and restrictions will not be lifted in one go after April 14.

Several hotspots have been singled out in cities across the country for greater effort on isolating them completely. In Delhi, 20 coronavirus hotspots in Delhi – including the famous Sadar Bazar — will be sealed, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced at an emergency meeting held at the Chief Minister’s  residence.

Amid rising pressure and requests for the key drug from over 30 countries, led by the United States, the government has alowed limited exports of the key drug to “nations that have been badly affected” by the pandemic. US President Donald Trump was the first to thank India after the government allowed the United States to buy 29 million doses of hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug believed effective in the treatment of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has asked the government to ensure coronavirus tests are conducted for free in both state-run and private diagnostic labs.

The report added another layer to the Smriti Irani versus Rahul Gandhi row since the Congress leader lost his three-time constituency Amethi in last year’s national election. While Smriti Irani won from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi won his second election contest at Wayanad in Kerala.

Rajasthan recorded 30 more cases of coronavirus on Thursday, taking the state’s tally to 413, an official said.

The virus has so far claimed six lives in the state. However, officials maintain that deaths occurred due to co-morbidity — more than one illness or disease occurring in one person at the same time.

He said the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the state has risen to 413.

Goa tourism to resume only when COVID-19 situation in control

The Goa tourism industry can resume only after the lockdown is lifted and the coronavirus situation is completely under control in the country, state Ports Minister Michael Lobo has said.

“Even after the lockdown is lifted, we cannot immediately think of opening our borders. We have to make sure the tourism industry resumes only after health protocols are followed,” Mr Lobo said.

Mass gatherings should be discouraged in the state for next few months to contain the spread of the deadly viral infection, he said.
